Ikea Closet Hack
So, my husband got a wild hair you-know-where and decided we were going to update our master bedroom closet. Ummm, yes please! We started looking around and priced a few options out, originally wanting someone to come in and just do it all for us.
However, when we reached out to a local closet designer (going to leave them anonymous) they came for measurements, etc., and then … (crickets) … NEVER got back to us with design options. We were ready to drop thousands and they dropped the ball, big time. So we went for the DIY Ikea hack option!
I don’t know about your husband, but mine gets ideas and if we don’t move fast it won’t happen. So knowing this I stayed on top of it, but after more researching and visiting the Atlanta IKEA, we decided on doing it ourselves! We had made a pact that from now on we would not DIY bigger projects, but financially it was such a win to DIY the closet, we went for it. When it was all said and done we spend under $3000! WIN!!!!!
Jake laid out the design online at ikea.com. We printed it out, moved things around and came to our final design. We ordered it all online and had it delivered that week! The downside of doing an IKEA hack is all the boxes and, well, installing and building it all ourselves. I helped by making the drawers one evening, but let’s face it —Jake did 99% of the work.
To give it some high-end finishes, we ordered a new ceiling light, and some flush lighting for the actual units. This made a big difference and helps us find things that are tucked away. We also selected some glass open shelving and decorative wallpaper, adding custom detail and design to the closet.
Jake attached crown molding to the top to connect the gap between the closet and ceiling, and some nice baseboard at the bottom, enhancing the high-end look we wanted. To hide some of the “cheaper” looking finish of the IKEA closet units, we put white wallpaper over the backs of each unit, covering the seams. Eventually we will cover up some of the peg holes as well.
I am still working on some custom jewelry and purse holders for my longer necklaces but overall it is finished and we could not love it more! I 100% recommend the IKEA closet hack.
